Monitoring Produced Sand on Offshore Oil
Platforms for Overboard Discharge |
|
Location: offshore oil platform in the South China Sea, Malaysia.
Produced sand is generated from oil and gas production and must be
disposed off-site or dumped overboard. Customer uses TD-500D to
help monitor and treat produced sand contaminated with crude oil in
order to meet their 10,000 ppm (mg/Kg) discharge limit.
Sand is tested for hydrocarbons using methanol. If the use or
transport solvents are prohibitive, a surfactant can be used as a
substitute, available from Sitelab's partner Turner Designs
Hydrocarbon Instruments, Inc (below).

PAH Evaluation Testing Asphalt in
France |
|
New regulations by the European Union require
laboratory testing for polyaromatic hydrocarbons when recycling or
disposing old tar and asphalt from road planings. Sitelab's
UVF-3100D and TD-500D analyzers are very sensitive to the same PAHs
detected by the certified laboratory methods. An evaluation
study performed by ESITC shows good accuracy testing PAHs compared
to EPA Method 8270 by GC/MS performed by four certified laboratories. |

Testing Benzo[a]Pyrene at
Bioremediation Facility |
|
King County Department of Transportation in Seattle monitors PAHs to
help determine if their bioremediated soil meets or exceeds state
cleanup levels for Benzo[a]Pyrene.
The Street Waste Alternative Program (SWAP), manages 10,000
to 15,000 cubic yards of material a year, generated from road
maintenance operations. The
soils consist of catch basin sediments and street sweepings which
are composted and treated. The processed soils are tested to ensure
that any pollutant levels are within acceptable concentrations prior
to reuse for on-site low risk applications. |

Testing TPH
at Lumwana Copper Mine, Zambia |
|
Equinox Minerals operates the biggest copper mine in Africa,
located at Lumwana in Northwest Province, Zambia. Open pit mining
methods are used to access the ore which is hauled to the process
plant where it is crushed and processed into final concentrate.
Scientists used Sitelab's hand held TD-500D analyzer and test kits to
measure hundreds of soil samples contaminated by petroleum
hydrocarbons resulting from their mining operations. |

Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon Analysis at New Jersey
Brownfield Site |
U.S. EPA Region 2 conducted a pilot study for a Brownfield site in
Milltown, New Jersey, as part of the TRIAD program. The site
had a long history of different uses with various petroleum
contaminates.
Sitelab's TD-500D analyzer and TPH-Oil
calibration kit were evaluated testing soil samples collected
throughout the site. Results correlated well to split samples
sent to a certified lab using EPA Method 418.1 by Infrared. |

PAHs in Creosote at
Marina Redevelopment Site |
|
A
developer was excavating a wharf on a lake in upstate New York,
which was contaminated with creosote soaked logs and soil.
Creosote contains chrysene, benzo[a]pyrene and many other
polyaromatic hydrocarbons that are regulated by NY DEC. The
TD-500D was used to check PAH concentrations in order to help
segregate which soils could be reused on-site and which soils had to
be trucked away to a costly landfill.

TPH in River Sediments Contaminated by Coal Tar at Former MGP
Site |
|
A contractor was cleaning up river sediments
contaminated by a former manufactured gas plant in Colorado. Since the early 19th century,
these plants converted coal into gas used for lighting and heating.
The residual coal tars and oils produced on these sites contain high
concentrations of PAHs and TPH. Like many MGP sites, this site
contained a subsurface plume of DNAPL oil (dense non aqueous phase
liquids).
Coal tar collected from
the site's plume was sent to Sitelab for TD-500D analysis and used
to prepare a calibration standard for TPH measurement. |
